The Slightest Touch Would Take My Breath Away
How insight flowed from pain
On a bright August day, an accident stepped in and changed my life. My career path crumbled like a sand castle. As long as I was awake, I was in pain. Worse, I had lost my idependence as I went from being the Mom who was invinsible to surrendering control over the simplest of tasks.
For months I asked:
- Why is this happening to me?
- When things get back to normal?
During this period, my medical team emphasized repeatedly that they didn’t know what was going to happen. I might return to “normal” or I might not.
"No" was not an option
Months earlier, my husband had purchased theatre tickets for the holidays. It was an international dance troupe and he knew that I would enjoy it. But as the date approached I insisted that I stay home. There was no way I could navigate a crowd or reach my seat in those narrow rows. He insisted that I go. The compromise?
We rented a wheelchair.
My daughter helped me dress into a colorful top to get me into a festive mood and after lots of menuvering I made into the theatre where my I could sit parked in my wheelchair. As I sat in the darkness of the auditorium and looked onto the stage, the dancers seemed to float in the air. Slowly I connected with the music, the story line, and felt a profound level of gratitude.
I had started to heal.
After three years it was as if I was reborn.
