How insight flowed from pain
On a bright August day, an accident stepped in and changed my life. My plans turned into sand. As long as I was awake, I was in pain. The roles in our family flipped; I had surrendered control over the simplest of tasks. I had lost my independence.
For months I asked:
- Why is this happening to me?
- When things be normal?
My medical team emphasized that there was no guarantee. I might return to “normal” or I might not.
My family didn't take "No"
Months earlier, my husband had purchased theatre tickets. As the date approached I insisted that I stay home. There was no way I could navigate a crowd or reach the narrow seating. He insisted that I go. The compromise?
We rented a wheelchair.
My daughter helped me pick out a bright top and I made it. As I sat in the darkness of the auditorium and looked onto the stage, the dances seemed to float in the air. Slowly I reconnected with the music, the story line, and a profound level of gratitude.
I had started to heal.
After three years it was as if I was reborn.
